The Benefits of AR Technology on SDGs

Augmented Reality

The Benefits of AR Technology on SDGs aim to expand and digitally integrate the user’s world or the physical environment in real time. To achieve this, several display technologies can be used that can combine or overlay data (numbers, letters, symbols, music, video, and images) with the user’s perspective of the actual environment.

Recognized as one of the most significant technological developments of the twenty-first century and a fundamental element of the new industrial revolution envisioned by Industry 4.0, AR is gaining increasing recognition. In fact, numerous papers in the literature highlight some of the most important applications of AR to reach its full potential in a variety of industries [1].

While it does sound more exciting to create the perfect virtual world, people shouldn’t put the virtual world ahead of the actual one. Indeed, the real-world dimension enables people to live satisfying lives. Moreover, the condition of the real world will define the destiny of the country’s generation and, more specifically, the destiny of cyberspace. Unfortunately, a flawed real world will prevent us from creating the perfect virtual environment. Therefore, promoting sustainable development projects in the actual world with AR technology is essential  [2].

Benefits of utilizing AR to further the 2030 SDGs

The benefit of AR utilizing can contribute to SDGs in several ways. The following are :

  1. Sustainable Education: AR in education can improve the quality of learning and understanding of important concepts, in line with efforts to achieve quality education goals [3].
  2. Sustainable Marketing: In the context of marketing, AR can help create interactive experiences that strengthen consumer appeal, thus potentially supporting inclusive economic growth [4].
  3. Consumer Engagement: AR enables more in-depth consumer interaction, supporting environmental protection efforts and sustainable use of resources [4].

Thus, AR significantly contributes to achieving the SDGs, particularly in quality education, inclusive economic growth, and sustainable resource use. In conclusion, AR technology holds enormous promise for achieving the 2030 SDGs by improving education, fostering innovation, and promoting ethical consumption and production. Importantly, by leveraging AR technology, diverse stakeholders can collaborate to shape a more inclusive and sustainable future. Therefore, it’s crucial to continue exploring and investing in this promising technology to fully harness its potential for the betterment of our world.

The Benefits of AR Technology on SDGs

The primary uses of AR technology

The technology of AR include:

  1. Gaming and Entertainment: AR is used in gaming to provide immersive and interactive experiences. Games like Pokémon GO and Snapchat filters are popular examples[5].
  2. Medical Training: AR technology is used in medical studies to help learners handle expensive equipment like MRI scanners [6].
  3. Education: AR apps are used in education to provide interactive and engaging learning experiences, allowing students to visualize complex concepts [7].
  4. Industrial Manufacturing: AR can be used in industrial manufacturing for tasks such as equipment maintenance and repair, where it can provide real-time guidance and information [5].
  5. Marketing and Retail: AR is used in marketing campaigns to create interactive experiences, such as AR product try-ons and scavenger hunts. In retail, it can be used for product visualization and to enhance the consumer shopping experience [7].

These are just a few examples of the diverse applications of AR technology, which also extends to areas such as architecture and home design, travel, and interior design, among others.
