Creating a More Interactive Customer Experience Through Product Packaging
In 2022, British Brow Bar, a Mumbai-based beauty brand and salon, was preparing to introduce a range of easy-to-wear false eyelashes.
The launch created an opportunity to think differently about how customers could interact with the brand after purchasing the product.
Rather than allowing the customer journey to end with the physical packaging, InReality Solutions proposed transforming every eyelash box into an interactive digital touchpoint.
The idea was to use augmented reality to allow customers to virtually meet British Brow Bar co-founder Debbie Ghosh directly within their own physical environment.
After scanning a QR code inside the product packaging, customers could launch a browser-based augmented reality experience and place a life-size representation of Debbie in the room with them.
From within the same experience, customers could access an eyelash application tutorial, shop for additional products, contact British Brow Bar through WhatsApp, visit the company website, and connect with the brand through Instagram and TikTok.
The result was a permanent connected packaging experience designed to combine product education, e-commerce, customer support, and social engagement within a single interactive WebAR activation.
The Opportunity: Extending the Customer Journey Beyond the Product
For many consumer products, the relationship between the brand and customer becomes limited once the product has been purchased.
The packaging may contain instructions, product information, and branding, but the physical space available to communicate with customers is inherently limited.
British Brow Bar’s new eyelash products created an opportunity to approach packaging differently.
Instead of treating the product box solely as a physical container, InReality Solutions proposed using augmented reality to create an interactive gateway between the customer and the brand.
The experience could welcome customers after purchase, introduce them to British Brow Bar, help them learn how to use the product, provide direct access to customer support, encourage additional purchases, and connect them with the brand’s digital channels.
All of this could begin from a QR code printed inside the product packaging.
The Creative Concept: Bringing the Brand’s Co-Founder into the Customer’s Environment
The concept, creative direction, script, storyboard, and AR experience were developed by InReality Solutions.
The central idea was simple:
What if customers could virtually meet one of the people behind British Brow Bar after opening their eyelash packaging?
Instead of using a conventional promotional video, InReality Solutions proposed creating a markerless augmented reality experience featuring British Brow Bar co-founder Debbie Ghosh.
Customers would be able to place a life-size representation of Debbie directly within their own physical environment.
She would welcome the customer, introduce British Brow Bar, and direct them toward different actions they could take within the experience.
The objective was to make the interaction feel more personal and memorable than simply watching a video on a conventional webpage.
InReality Solutions developed the concept, created the storyboard and visual mock-ups, and provided the script used for the approximately 30-second video.
Debbie independently recorded the source video before providing the footage to InReality Solutions for processing and AR development.
Why We Chose Markerless Augmented Reality
The experience could have been developed using image tracking, with the digital content remaining anchored to the eyelash packaging.
InReality Solutions deliberately proposed a different approach.
The objective was to create the impression that Debbie had stepped out of the product experience and into the customer’s own environment.
Markerless augmented reality allowed customers to position her on a flat surface within their surroundings rather than requiring them to continuously point their cameras toward the physical packaging.
This created a more flexible and immersive interaction.
After placing the AR content, customers could adjust the scale, make Debbie appear larger or smaller, and rotate the experience to position her appropriately within their environment.
The markerless approach helped transform the experience from a conventional packaging animation into a more personal interaction between the customer and the brand.
How the British Brow Bar AR Experience Worked
A QR code and simple instructions were printed inside the flap of each eyelash package.
Customers were instructed to scan the QR code and launch the AR experience.
After opening the WebAR experience through their smartphone, users could point the camera toward a suitable flat surface and tap the screen to place the content.
A life-size representation of Debbie Ghosh would then appear within the customer’s physical environment.
No dedicated mobile application was required.
The experience was delivered through WebAR, allowing customers to access the content through a compatible smartphone browser.
Once the experience was active, customers could listen to Debbie’s welcome message and interact with six integrated calls to action positioned around her.
Connecting Customers to Six Digital Brand Touchpoints
The British Brow Bar WebAR experience was designed to do more than create a moment of visual novelty.
It was also intended to provide customers with practical next steps.
Six calls to action were integrated directly into the experience.
The two primary calls to action were positioned prominently within the AR environment:
Tutorial allowed customers to access instructional content showing them how to correctly apply the eyelash products.
Shop directed customers toward British Brow Bar’s online shopping experience, where they could explore and purchase additional products.
Four additional calls to action were positioned around the lower portion of the experience:
- British Brow Bar website
- TikTok
Together, these six touchpoints connected the physical product to product education, customer support, e-commerce, brand information, and social media.
Instead of requiring customers to independently search for the company’s digital channels, the relevant destinations were accessible directly through the AR experience.
From Physical Packaging to Connected Packaging
One of the most important differences between the British Brow Bar project and a temporary AR marketing campaign was its permanence.
The QR code was printed directly inside every eyelash package.
This meant the AR experience traveled with the physical product.
Customers purchasing the eyelashes through British Brow Bar’s physical location or through e-commerce could discover the experience after receiving and opening their product.
Because British Brow Bar sold the eyelash products online, the connected packaging experience was not restricted to customers in Mumbai.
The physical product could travel throughout India, and the WebAR experience could travel with it.
Available analytics later recorded interactions from Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Gurgaon, and other locations.
The packaging therefore became a persistent connection between the physical product and British Brow Bar’s digital ecosystem.
The Technical Challenge: Delivering High-Quality Video Through WebAR
The central technical challenge of the project involved transforming the original video footage into an experience that could load and perform effectively through a mobile browser.
The original video file was approximately 20 MB.
For a browser-based augmented reality experience, particularly one intended to be accessed across different smartphones and internet connections, the file needed significant optimization.
InReality Solutions reduced the video to under 3 MB while working to maintain acceptable visual and audio quality.
This required balancing several competing requirements:
- Video quality
- Audio quality
- File size
- Loading performance
- Mobile browser compatibility
- AR performance
Reducing the file size too aggressively could noticeably degrade the visual appearance of the experience.
Maintaining too much of the original quality, however, could create a larger file that took longer to load and affected the overall customer experience.
Finding the appropriate balance was a critical part of the development process.
Processing the Video for Augmented Reality
The video provided by Debbie required additional processing before it could be integrated into the WebAR experience.
InReality Solutions used chroma key and green-screen processing techniques to remove the original video background and isolate Debbie from the surrounding environment.
The footage then needed to be optimized, resized, and prepared for use within the markerless AR environment.
Once the video processing was complete, InReality Solutions developed the complete visual composition surrounding the content.
The six interactive calls to action were designed and positioned around Debbie.
Icons, interface elements, and visual details were developed to remain consistent with British Brow Bar’s brand identity.
The links and interactive functionality were then integrated into the experience.
The result was a unified AR interface in which the brand representative, messaging, customer actions, and digital destinations appeared together within the customer’s physical environment.
Designing the Experience Around the Brand
The objective was not simply to place a transparent video into augmented reality.
The entire experience needed to feel consistent with British Brow Bar.
InReality Solutions therefore developed the visual treatment around the company’s existing branding.
This included:
- CTA design
- Icon selection
- Brand-appropriate colors
- Visual positioning
- Interface composition
- Content hierarchy
The two most important customer actions—viewing the tutorial and shopping for products—were given greater visual prominence.
The remaining actions connected customers with WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, and the British Brow Bar website.
This hierarchy was designed to help customers quickly understand what they could do within the experience.
Combining Brand Experience with Practical Customer Utility
A significant aspect of the British Brow Bar project was the combination of entertainment and utility.
The AR experience provided the novelty of placing a life-size representation of the company’s co-founder within the customer’s physical environment.
However, the experience also addressed practical stages of the post-purchase customer journey.
A customer unsure how to correctly apply the eyelashes could access the tutorial.
A customer interested in additional products could visit the shopping page.
A customer with questions could contact the company through WhatsApp.
Customers interested in continuing to engage with British Brow Bar could connect through Instagram and TikTok.
The WebAR experience therefore functioned as both an interactive brand activation and a digital customer engagement hub.
The Results: 2,320 Scans Across Multiple Indian Cities
The original British Brow Bar experience was launched in 2022 and later migrated to a new AR project in 2025.
Analytics from the migrated experience recorded:
2,320 scans.
The average time spent on the experience page was:
37 seconds.
The device breakdown included:
1,418 scans from Android devices.
And:
902 scans from iOS devices.
Geographic analytics recorded interactions across multiple Indian cities, including:
- 1,276 scans from Mumbai
- 418 scans from New Delhi
- 209 scans from Bangalore
- 185 scans from Hyderabad
- 162 scans from Gurgaon
- 70 scans from other locations
Because the products were available through e-commerce, the AR experience was able to travel with the physical packaging beyond British Brow Bar’s Mumbai location.
The geographic distribution of the available analytics demonstrates how connected packaging can extend a digital brand experience to customers across different locations.
A Permanent Digital Touchpoint Built into Every Product Box
Unlike a limited-time AR campaign, the British Brow Bar experience was designed to remain accessible through the physical product packaging.
As long as customers had access to the packaging and the experience remained online, the QR code could continue connecting them with British Brow Bar’s digital ecosystem.
This gave the packaging a purpose beyond containing and protecting the product.
It became an entry point to:
- Product education
- E-commerce
- Customer support
- Social media
- Brand information
- Interactive content
The experience demonstrates how consumer brands can use WebAR and connected packaging to continue the customer relationship after a product has been purchased.
What the British Brow Bar Project Demonstrates About AR Packaging
The British Brow Bar project demonstrates how augmented reality can connect physical products with multiple stages of the digital customer journey.
The experience began with a simple action: scanning a QR code inside an eyelash package.
From there, the customer could virtually meet the brand’s co-founder, learn more about the company, access product tutorials, purchase additional products, contact the business directly, and connect with its social media channels.
No dedicated application was required.
By combining WebAR, video content, markerless placement, interactive calls to action, and connected packaging, InReality Solutions transformed a physical product box into a permanent interactive customer touchpoint.
The project also demonstrates the importance of designing AR experiences around business objectives rather than novelty alone.
The technology attracted attention.
The content created a more personal brand interaction.
The integrated calls to action provided practical next steps.
And the connected packaging allowed the experience to travel with products sold to customers across India.
